Winkler&Winkler: BURNS

Tenor Andreas Winkler and guitarist Michael Winkler have been making music together for over ten years. From the beginning, the two classically trained musicians have been inspired by Irish and Scottish folk music. In the past years of their collaboration, the artists have already produced two albums with numerous cover versions of the best-known songs and ballads from the British Isles. Their very own readings and interpretations have always taken centre stage. The new and fresh approach to these tradition-rich songs has been widely praised by the trade press and has won the duo a loyal following. Now it was time to go a step further and enrich the Celtic oeuvre with their own compositions.
The inspiring texts and poems of the Scottish national poet Robert Burns were at the centre of the musical considerations from the very beginning. Stylistically, the newly composed works are oriented towards the Scottish music of the second half of the 19th century. The period in which Robert Burns lived. It was important to the musicians to take this music as a basis and to translate it into today's time. The songs sing of difficult times in the life of the erratic poet prince, who had to leave his beloved homeland. Lost loves, lifelong friendships and the wonderful Scottish landscapes are repeatedly the focus of the trenchant and accomplished lyrics of this Scottish legend. Two poems with the content of Freemasonry do justice to the intense lodge life of Robert Burns and round off the comprehensive view of his life and work.

The Wonderful World of Nino Rota

Cinema enthusiasts all over the world will have no difficulty recalling some of the wonderfully circus-like melodies of Federico Fellini's films. The suggestive power of this music is irresistible, and made its composer Nino Rota (1911-1979) an instant classic.
But Rota not only left his mark on the soundtrack of over one hundred and fifty films, he also left behind a multitude of other pieces: Operas, symphonies, concertos for orchestra and various solo instruments, and chamber music - all of the highest quality. A never-ending wealth of ideas and deep emotionality can be regarded as the common denominator in Rota's highly individual work.
The many Rota interpretations and arrangements are joined by a very special line-up in this recording. The musicians David Sautter (arrangements, guitar) and Murat Cevik (flute) have put together 23 little-known pieces and "gutter hits". Rota's compositions appear to only have been waiting for the congenial performance of these two instrumentalists: the feather-light, sparkling, sometimes darker playing of Murat's flute, and David's guitar, which sets the beat and suddenly starts swinging.
The excerpts from the "15 preludi per Pianoforte" form the enchanting prelude - flute and guitar in dialogue, dancing on the high wire -, followed by a musical bouquet in all its colourful facets until the concluding "Notti di Cabiria"; here the duo casually lives out its jazz affinity and harmoniously rounds off the homage.

Eos Guitar Quartet - El alma de Paco

n homenaje a Paco de Lucía
El maestro guitarrista Paco de Lucía, cuyo aniversario de muerte se celebrará por séptima vez en 2021, es el foco del nuevo CD del Eos Guitar Quartet. Para los cuatro músicos, su música, su fuerza innovadora y el contacto personal con él fueron una fuente de inspiración constante. Como expresión de esta gran admiración, el Eos Guitar Quartet solicitó a los tres compositores, Leo Brouwer, John McLaughlin y José Antonio Rodríguez, que escribiesen obras para el cuarteto bajo el lema "Homenaje a Paco de Lucía".El resultado son obras que enriquecen de manera sobresaliente el repertorio para cuarteto de guitarra. También en el espíritu de Paco, el Eos Guitar Quartet interpreta composiciones originales de Marcel Ege y David Sautter junto a tres danzas de Manuel de Falla. La voz de la legendaria cantaora Carmen Linares y el sutil acompañamiento del percusionista Ricardo Espinosa añaden una dimensión especial al CD.

Michael Winkler plays Francisco Tárrega

When I heard Francisco Tárrega's music for the first time as a teenager, I was immediately spellbound. I was in love with his melodies, his harmonies and the elegance of his waltzes. This music was a perfect match for the guitar and my attitude to life at that time. I played the pieces at every opportunity. They were, so to speak, "my" pieces. A few years later, I lost interest in this music and discovered the polyphony, the music of Dowland and Bach. For over 35 years Tárregas works remained untouched until I rediscovered them. 

In 2019, I felt the need to take up his compositions again, to rediscover the music and to venture a new interpretation with more mature point of view. It has not become a historically inspired recording. The guitar, built in 2018 by the German guitar builder Thomas Eichert, has a modern and clear sound and is far away from the dark sound of a Torres guitar like the one Tárrega used. I have interpreted many pieces more slenderly and rhythmically tighter than at that time, but I have also taken more time where necessary. In addition, I wanted to make this recording with na- tural acoustics. The beautiful surround sound of the chapel supported my joy of playing and stimulated my creati- vity. 

Here, I have recorded my favourite and at the same time the most important of his original compositions. Partly they are also only very short pieces which I still find just as charming as back then. I hope you feel the same way. Sincerely, Michael Winkler
